Investigation of Air-Sea Turbulent Momentum Flux over the Aegean Sea with a Wind-Wave Coupling Model
نویسندگان
چکیده
Near surface turbulent momentum flux estimates are performed over the Aegean Sea, using two different approaches regarding drag coefficient formulation, a wave boundary layer model (referred here as KCM) and most commonly used Coupled Ocean–Atmosphere Response Experiment (COARE) algorithm. The KCM incorporates modifications in energy-containing spectrum to account for conditions of similarity stratification effects. Airborne turbulence data during an Etesian outbreak Greece processed evaluate simulations. found up 10% higher than COARE ones, indicating that wave-induced may be insufficiently parameterized COARE. Turbulent fluxes measured at about 150 m, reduced their values accounting vertical divergence, consistently lower estimates. Under unstable atmospheric low moderate wind conditions, residuals between measurements less 40%. On other hand, under stable strong winds, majority more This discrepancy is associated with relatively high measurement level, shallow layer, presence level jet.

Wind Atlas of Aegean Sea with SAR data
The Global Wind Atlas project is established to create a ”free-to-use” wind atlas of the whole globe. The modelling chain of the project includes micro-scale models and new reanalysis datasets. Local measurements are planed to be use for test and validation. Unfortunately, it is not always possible to find long term offshore measurement to make wind statistics. The main reason is the cost of se...
متن کاملA Physics-Based Parameterization of Air–Sea Momentum Flux at High Wind Speeds and Its Impact on Hurricane Intensity Predictions
A new bulk parameterization of the air–sea momentum flux at high wind speeds is proposed based on coupled wave–wind model simulations for 10 tropical cyclones that occurred in the Atlantic Ocean during 1998–2003. The new parameterization describes how the roughness length increases linearly with wind speed and the neutral drag coefficient tends to level off at high wind speeds. The proposed par...
متن کاملA nested circulation model for the North Aegean Sea
A multi-nested approach has been employed for numerical simulations in the northern part of the Aegean Sea in the framework of the MFSTEP (Mediterranean Forecast System: Toward Environmental Predictions) project. The high resolution (∼1.6 km) hydrodynamic model of the North Aegean Sea (NAS) has been nested within a coarser model of the Eastern Mediterranean (resolution ∼3.6 km) which is also ne...

متن کاملThe Momentum Flux Balance at the Sea Surface
Today, secondand third-generation wave models are used for many applications around the world. From the design of coastal structures to proper regional sediment management and from estimates of mixing in the upper ocean to the efficient the routing of ships across oceans, the accuracy of these models has critical importance. However, following the development of the WAM model in the mid to late...
